What Essential Equipment Does a Pilates Studio Need?

2025-11-11

Many Pilates apparatuses use springs of different sizes and tensions. These springs are fixed at various heights and angles to frames, bars, and hooks, creating unique resistance for each piece of equipment. Some machines support full-body movement, while others require stabilizing part of the body while coordinating other areas. Large Pilates apparatuses and small props together form a professional Pilates studio. Today, we’re introducing the five most classic Pilates machines.

1. Reformer

The Reformer is perhaps the most iconic piece of Pilates equipment. Through the carriage, springs, footbar, straps, and other parts, it helps users perform exercises. These components not only help practitioners sense their bodies and guide them to move along the correct planes and paths, but also offer varying levels of training difficulty based on individual physical conditions. At the same time, they provide support when needed—truly earning the name of a “universal bed.”

When a box is added to the Reformer, many prone and seated movements can be performed on it. With additional attachments such as the tower, box, or jump board, the Reformer can transform into numerous configurations and uses.

2. Trapeze Table / Cadillac

The Trapeze Table, also known as the Cadillac, is another Pilates apparatus often seen in public studios. It is extremely versatile—users can perform movements using the “trapeze” built into the frame of the bed. By changing the settings of the trapeze and springs, users can create a wide variety of exercises based on their own needs.

3. Chair

The Pilates Chair is a compact piece of equipment featuring a pedal linked with springs. Depending on body position, users can effectively train limb control and strength through this apparatus.

4. Ladder Barrel

The most recognizable features of the Ladder Barrel are the ladder on one side and the “barrel” on the other. Thanks to its curved design, it is commonly used for spinal extension. Standing, stretching, hanging, and climbing movements can all be performed on the Ladder Barrel. Its unique height and design allow for a wide range of motion.

5. Spine Corrector

Similar to the Ladder Barrel, the Spine Corrector is defined by its curved shape. One of its major advantages is that it is more lightweight and can be placed on a yoga mat, Reformer, or Cadillac. This allows users to stretch their spine while lying on their back or side. Barrels of different heights and curves support the body within the spine’s mobility range, prioritizing the safety of spinal extension. In an era when hunching over computers all day is increasingly common, even a small amount of stretching can be very beneficial.
